TEIEN is a hand-crafted hemp fibre ABS garden tool set, suited for gardening in most environments. The set presents a dynamic, modern, elegant aesthetic, with a trowel and fork. Also including seed infused cards that push the incentive to start planting. Teien is presented in a timeless, displayable case that showcases original craftsmanship.
The name Teien comes from the Japanese word for “garden”. This translated into the thought of Japanese craftsmanship and the way that Japanese tools are presented, with elegancy and precision.
Due to the controversial opinion’s on plastic and its negative environmental effects, TEIEN's focus is to show that plastic has equal value to other, often preferred, materials. Pushing this incentive, using craftsmanship, showing how it can create remarkable products with elegant and timeless designs. TEIEN will be made from recyclable plastic that’s both durable and sustainable to produce. TEIEN is designed for newly started gardens or unmaintained gardens, no matter how big or small.
The garden tool set encompasses two essential tools and a seed pack in order to get new gardeners started. The trowel and fork combine industrial design with a handcrafted approach. TEIEN is perfect for green fingered consumers that are drawn to refined designs. Its case is made so the tools are easily stored, while also showcasing their professional, hand-crafted aesthetic.
To scale sketch models where created and tested, then developed into prototypes that took on the handcrafted aesthetic by adding features to the handle and tool. Hand-wrapped handles and supports were added to the final prototype, that improved its form. While also, displaying the finger joints, that would be used to manufacture the case.
The goal for this project is to add a social value and luxury incentive to plastics items, as plastic products can seem cheap and wasteful, if not done affectively. Therefore, my intentions are to present plastic with parallel manufacturing techniques and outcomes as metal and wood. By exploring basic forms of garden tools, a dynamic form, combined a traditional handle represented in Japanese knifes was design and developed.
